Welcome back! Today I want to talk about some ideas I have for the front door of my tiny house. I’m currently using the trailer supplied retractable RV style stairs. While these are functional I would like a deck area immediately upon exiting the front door to utilize the exterior space better and make it more welcoming. I would also like a covered area over and around the door to store shoes so that I don’t track dirt into the house.
In my current parking spot there is about a 25″ drop from the front door to the ground. There are 3 pull out RV stairs permanently attached to the trailer frame. The the bottom stair lies flat on the ground. Not a problem but there isn’t much grass in this location and when it rains the water/mud covered the lowest stair. If I had a little porch with a covered area over the front door I could eliminate walking in mud/water and could leave dirty shoes outside. Plus, I think it would make it more welcoming.
I could hire a handyman/contractor to build a custom porch for me but am stuck with transporting it when I move. I’m not necessarily ruling out this option but want something light and mobile. My google search started with looking at mobile home stairs. Which look something like this…
These type of stairs ships directly to you and come in multiple sizes and finishes. Quite frankly, I just don’t like the look of them and they look heavy. I’m passing on this one! Next, I looked into RV stairs. Here are some options.
I don’t really like the look of these BUT it’s kind of what I had in mind as they can be taken apart or fold down for transport. I like the size of the WVU one pictured above. It’s a DIY one that’s on Pinterest so I may have to look into that. The metal one that folds up is about $1200 online and opens up similar to one of those sun tents. And the one on the back of the truck camper is a custom made one but I like the look of.
What do you think of this? Which one do you like better?
