Hello, hello! I’m really on a HOT topic (get it?) here and going to go with it while it lasts. I’ve discussed this topic quite a bit recently – solar cooking options – and last night, a new one popped up in my facebook feed. So here you go…similar to the solar slow cooker oven, here is a solar grill!
This solar grill isn’t available yet as it’s a project on Kickstarter. If you aren’t familiar with Kickstarter, it’s a program in which you pitch a product idea and get supporters to fund it as a start-up after a certain amount of money (I’m assuming the start-up manufacturing costs) are met. You can find the item here: solar grill kickstarter link
Anyways, this solar grill is similar to the solar oven in that it uses a reflector to gather and direct the sun to a single spot that is hot enough to heat a pan. This is the website for the product. Quoting directly from the product website, “The parabolic mirror concentrates direct sunlight onto the cookware for instant heat reaching 550°F / 280°C. That means you can boil 4 cups / 1 litre of water in 10 minutes.”
This solar grill is on kickstarter for $150 but you can purchase directly from the product website for $500. What do you think? Would it work? Would you use it?
I’m curious about this one because unlike the solar oven, I use more grill type cooking methods in the summer months when I don’t want the added heat (or smell) in my house. However, since I have a small and efficient propane grill (that I know works) I don’t have a need for a solar grill.
